About Us
Wigan and Leigh Wrestling Club is
going from strength to strength at
the moment.
Our club has approximately 50
students, Male and Female, many of
whom not only compete at club level,
but also Nationally and Internationally
for Team GB. The
club has many young stars of the
future, ranging from our mini
wrestlers who have competed with
tremendous success from the ages of
6 years to British squad member
Michael Grundy who has represented
Great Britain at most recently The
2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi,
but also World and European
Chamionships. The
club is backed up by our hard
working club secretary Julie Grundy
along with a strong committee.
All of our coaches, Dave Grundy,
Michael Grundy, Lee Meadows and John
Heyes are experienced, qualified
and registered under the British
Wrestling Association. We currently
have further members training for
their Level 2 Wrestling Coach
certificates.
You can find us at Wigan and Leigh
Wrestling
Club, 227c Ormskirk Road, Newtown, Wigan every Monday
6.00 pm - 7.00 pm (Ages 5 - 16
years), Wednesday 6.00 pm - 8.00 pm
(Ages 5 - 16 years) and Friday
6.00pm - 7.00pm (Seniors Ages 16 and
over).
Classes usually start off with
warming up / stretching and fitness
exercises. After that our coaches
will teach the art of wrestling,
then finally a warm down.
For very young members much of the
wrestling skills are practised in
play, but as they continue to evolve
so does their training and this has
resulted in some of our mini team
winning numerous competitions
nationwide and they continue to show great
potential for the future. Training
is closely supervised at all times
by our qualified coaches and are
always there on hand to ensure safe
practices are carried out. The club
has approximately 25 children
training in the under 7′s sessions.
Children can compete at Club,
National and International
competitions from the ages of 6 - 7
years (Depending on BWA rules for
specific events).
Freestyle Wrestling
Freestyle wrestling is technically a
fighting form similar to grappling
but there is no striking as you
would expect to find in various
martial arts, for example karate or
kick boxing. You don’t need to be
naturally aggressive either as much
success in competition can be gained
from using speed and technique.
Contestants may apply holds above
and below the waist and may use
their legs for all holds. If both
the shoulders of a contestant are
forced to the mat simultaneously,
however briefly, a fall is scored
and the match ends. If no fall takes
place, a winner is chosen on a point
basis. Wrestlers may be penalized
for passivity in a match. If there
is a tie at the end of a match, the
wrestler with more technical points
will win.
If you become a Freestyle Wrestler,
child or adult, you will learn:
• Self discipline
• Self Control
• Self defence
• Respect for others
• To be a team player
• To be confident
Physically the sport promotes:
• Weight loss
• Increased strength
• Improved reactions and reflexes
• Increased fitness levels
• Increased flexibiltiy
• Builds confidence
Wrestling is the perfect choice if
you are an MMA fighter looking to
improve your ground fighting skills.
If you are a Rugby player looking to
find a good cross training sport,
wrestling can help with that as
well.
What ever your reasons for taking up
Freestyle Wrestling, at our club you
will be supported. |
